Opinion #3: Social Distancing Doesn’t Have to Mean Social Isolation
Social distancing and self-isolation have become the new norm, for now, and the foreseeable future in places all over the world.
Celebrities are spreading awareness on various platforms as for how important it is through this COVID- 19 crisis that we follow the rules of staying inside.
Although, that doesn’t have to mean social isolation. The new way of keeping in touch has escalated on a variety of platforms.
Zoom, House Party, Tik Tok, and Instagram Live are taking social distancing to a new level and trying to find ways to spread the message to young adults.
Celebrities like John Legend, Keith Urban and more are live streaming free concerts from home amid coronavirus. Other celebrities are even posting videos spreading awareness as to why it is important to follow the rules hoping that maybe their young fans will listen to them.
The problem is, many children still have yet to care.
So, my question is, everyone is doing their part, why can’t you?
Young adults have this mindset that it won’t affect their age group, therefore they don’t care, and they still chose to go meet up with friends.
Being a college kid, I recognize the frustration. I am a senior in college missing out on the last moments I’ve looked forward to the past three years, but there is nothing you can do about it.
It irritates me that I am here doing my part following the rules so that this goes by quicker, but others are out there not giving a care in the world.
I understand that this is very tough for people who are our age to be stuck at home for this long period and miss out on seeing your friends, but the quicker we all act and follow the rules, the quicker this issue will die down.
All these media platforms are taking initiative to create ways for us to stay in touch and we are so lucky that we are in a generation that allows this sort of communication.
Imagine this happening 25 years ago when we didn’t have all these social media platforms, most of us would probably be going crazy!
This generation has taken us to a whole new level, where following these simple rules should be easy.
For example, Netflix has even created an extension called Netflix Party, a way for friends to be able to simultaneously stream shows and movies together on their desktop.
People can reduce this idea of disconnecting by also setting up video calls on programs like Zoom or Skype which allow several people to socialize through video.
Even Instagram Live is incorporating workouts for people to do at home to stay in shape.
This is not ideal and a hard adjustment for many of us but as of now, things won’t be the same.
It’s important to accept that this is a new ‘normal’ and embrace it.
Use this time to work on yourself. Use these social media platforms everyone’s embracing and take advantage of it. Get in shape, eat healthily and adjust your path of plans.
Things will get better, but it’s up to all of us to do our part.
